First Winter Climb to K2 Summit: The Impossible Achieved
Rising on the Pakistan-China border, K2 is the second highest mountain in the world at 8,611 meters. K2 was the only summit in the world above 8,000 meters that was not climbed in winter. On Saturday, January 16, 10 Nepali mountaineers sang the Nepali national anthem after reaching 10 meters below the summit at 17:00 local time and ascended to the summit in turn. Nirmal Puria Pun Magar (Nimsdai) and Mingma Gyalie Sherpa led the team that made its mark in the world mountaineering history. The other eight names are: Gelje Sherpa, Mingma David Sherpa, Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, Dawa Temba Sherpa, Pem Chhiri Sherpa, Kilu Pemba Sherpa, Dawa Tenjing Sherpa, and Sona Sherpa.
The K2 summit was first climbed by Italian Achille Compagnoni in 1954. The world’s highest peak, Everest, was first reached on a winter expedition in 1980. As for K2, six winter expeditions have been made before, but none of them have been able to reach the summit. During the winter expedition in 2003, two Polish mountaineers Denis Urubko and Marcin Kaczkan climbed the highest reached 7,650 metres. The summit, which came only 18 years after this expedition, is one of the unforgettable moments in mountaineering history. Dozens of climbers had previously lost their lives in K2 climbs. Unfortunately, there is bad news from this historical expedition. Spanish mountaineer Sergio Mingote, 49, died while descending the base camp.
