Mount Gasherbrum II
Gasherbrum II is located in the Karakoram region, on the Pakistan-China border. Also known as K4. At 8034 meters, it is the 13th highest mountain in the world and the 3rd highest in the Gasherbrum massif. (The others are Gasherbrum I and Broad Peak.) Its name means “Beautiful Mountain” in the Balti language (the language spoken by the people of the Baltistan region of Pakistan).
Climbing Mount Gasherbrum II in History
The Gasherbrum massif, which contains 3 mountains over 8,000 meters, was first explored in 1909 by the Duke of Abbruzzi and Vittoria Sella. In memory of this discovery, a branch of the Boltoro Glacier was named the Abruzzi Glacier.
In 1934, Günter Dyhrenfurth and Andre Roch, on an international Himalayan expedition, managed to climb up to 6250 meters.
The first ascent of Gasherbrum II was made by Fritz Moravec, Josef Larch and Hans Willenpart, members of the Austrian expedition, on July 7, 1956, from the southwestern ridge. The team that set up camp I went to higher altitudes for acclimatization, and on their return to camp, they found that an avalanche had destroyed all their equipment and food. With a sudden decision, they decided to make a very fast peak by biking. On the morning of July 6, 1956, they set out for the summit. Biquaking at night, they reached the summit at 11:30 the next day.
On February 2, 2011, Cory Richards, Denis Urubko and Simone Moro made their first winter ascent of the mountain.
Climbing Mount Gasherbrum II
Gasherbrum II is a mountain with a challenging climbing route and is considered a difficult summit due to high altitude, avalanche risk, and other natural hazards. However, it is a popular destination among climbers due to its natural beauty and impressive landscapes.
Gasherbrum II is part of the Gasherbrum Mountains, along with Gasherbrum I. The two peaks are located near K2 and are frequently visited by climbers attempting to summit K2. However, climbing the peak requires the proper equipment, experience, and preparation as natural hazards can put one’s life at risk.
Gasherbrum II is often preferred by climbers who want to climb K2, the second-highest mountain in the world. Additionally, there are many climbing events organized on Gasherbrum II, which are frequently attended by mountaineers.
