Mount Broad Peak
Located on the China-Pakistan border, Mount Broad Peak (Faichan Kangri) is the 12th highest mountain in the world with an altitude of 8047 meters. It is also called K3 because it is the 3rd highest mountain in the Karakoram region where it is located. The meaning of the name is “Broad Hill”. Because the summit is 1.5 km. is wide. Broad Peak is located within the Gasherbrum massif and is 8 km from the K2 mountain. Apart from the main peak, there is also the 8016-meter Broad Peak Central peak.
Broad Peak Climbs in the Past
In 1954 a German expedition (West German for the time) headed by Dr Karl M. Herlig Koffer attempted to climb Broad Peak. Their main purpose was to climb Gasherbrum I. But they tried Broad Peak and failed because of the cold weather and trouble convincing porters.
In 1957, an Austrian expedition led by Marcus Schmuck arrived at Broad Peak. The team included notable climbers such as Fritz Wintersteller, Kurt Diemberger and Hermann Buhl.
The team made a summit attempt on May 29, 1957, but was unsuccessful due to the storm and had to return to base camp. The four of them reached the summit of Broad Peak on June 9, 1957, without oxygen or sherpa support. During the month of June, the team made their first ascent of several 7,000-foot mountains in the vicinity. On one of these ascents, at Chogolisa (7,654 m), Hermann Buhl fell to his death. In 1987, 6 climbers from a Spanish expedition climbed the 8,016-metre Broad Peak Central peak.
On March 5, 2013, Polish climbers Maciej Berbeka, Adam Bielecki, Tomasz Kowalski and Artur Malek made the first winter ascent of Broad Peak. Return to the summit Maciej Berbeka and Tomasz Kowalski lost their lives.
Climbing Broad Peak
Broad Peak gets its name from its wide summit ridge and has a challenging climbing route. The climbing route is considered a difficult summit due to high oxygen deprivation, avalanche risks, and other natural hazards. However, due to its natural beauty and impressive scenery, it remains a popular destination among tourists and climbers.
Broad Peak is located next to K2 and is frequently visited by climbers who are climbing K2. Additionally, there are many climbing events held on Broad Peak, which are popular among climbers. However, the climb to the summit requires the right equipment, experience, and preparation, as your life may be at risk due to natural hazards.
