Geyik Mountains
Antalya, a province in Turkey, is known for its stunning natural landscapes, and the Geyik Mountains are one of its most impressive features. This range of mountains runs from the northernmost point of the Dedegöl Mountains to the Taşeli Plateau and separates the provinces of Konya, Karaman, and Antalya. The Geyik Mountains are a geological marvel, with rocks from the Cambrian and Tertiary periods forming the mountain system.
The Geyik Mountains: A Natural Wonder in Antalya
One of the most striking features of the Geyik Mountains is the snow on the north-facing hill slopes that lasts even in the summer. The highest peak of the Geyik Mountains is the peak of Geyik Mountain, which is located in the north-east of the Gündoğmuş district of Antalya, with a height of 2877 meters. Another notable peak is Sarıtaş Hill, located in the east-northeast direction of Antalya’s Gazipaşa district, with a height of 2339 meters.
The Geyik Mountains are home to many cirques on the northeast slopes. These cirques, formed on limestone, are also found on other slopes, but in smaller numbers. Glacial valleys without current glaciers are another common form of glacial erosion. The small moraines from glacial accumulation forms are rare, and it is known that the rock glacier found on the summits of Geyik Mountain is common in all Taurus Mountains. The rock glacier typically starts from an ice trough between 2050-2500 m, extends down in the form of a tongue, and gets wider. Its average length is 2000 m, its width is 800 m, and its thickness rarely exceeds 30 m. It can reach 50 m.
Apart from being a geological wonder, the Geyik Mountains are also a vital source of resources for the region. The Bauxite mine formed in the mountain system is a significant source of ore that is processed at Seydişehir Aluminum Facilities.
In conclusion, the Geyik Mountains are an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon in the province of Antalya, Turkey. Their beauty and geological significance are unmatched, making them a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts. The cirques, glacial valleys, and rock glaciers offer a glimpse into the geological history of the region. With snow-capped peaks even in summer and a vital source of resources, the Geyik Mountains are undoubtedly a gem of Antalya.
